jagjetta Posted 1 March , 2010 Share Posted 1 March , 2010 Greetings: I have just encountered a DFC (UK) with original horizontal striped ribbon that has had the disk on the reverse scratched out and obliterated. Is there any obvious reason for this? No other markings appear on the reverse. Backside
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 2 March , 2010 Share Posted 2 March , 2010 Because someone had it as a replacement for their own, lost Cross?
Philip Wilson Posted 2 March , 2010 Share Posted 2 March , 2010 Unless I am mistaken the centre of the reverse of the DFC usually has the Royal Cypher above the date 1918. Its possible somebody simply erased this with the intention of naming the Cross. The DFC is issued un-named, those for WW2 have the date of award engraved on the reverse of the lower limb. This version has the original horizontal ribbon which was replaced in June 1919 with diagonal alternate stripes of white and deep purple. Philip Wilson Posted 4 March , 2010 Share Posted 4 March , 2010 I have since consulted with some of my medal collecting chums here in the UK showing them the images of this DFC. Their view concurs with mine possibly an early Tailors copy. An examination of this item alongside that of a genuine DFC should proof conclusively whether or not it has the same dimensions as the official version of this award.
