high wood Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 This photograph taken at a Royal Engineers depot has various carts in the background. Can anyone please identify the Divisional? signs painted on the back of two of the carts? It might just help to identify the soldier whose name I have. Thanks. trenchtrotter Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 It is not a Div or Corps sign that I know. More likely a unit mark. TT

high wood Posted 28 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 28 February , 2010 Are you thinking XX = 20th? There appears to be a small I in the middle.
watchdog Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 It's not the 20th Division, which is a circle enclosing a cross and a black spot, nor the 2st which is a black circle enclosing a manx-like set of three legs.
Chris_Baker Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 It is not the standard 20th Divisional symbol, which was round. I can't see that it matches any of the text descriptions given by Michael Young for the ASC units.

high wood Posted 28 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 28 February , 2010 The soldier's name is Sapper J Charnock and he is described as, "Teddy Omerod's pal". The only Edward Omerod on the 1911 census is Albert Edward Omerod, born 1895 in Chorlton, Lancashire. There are mics for several J Charnocks in the Royal Engineers but only two of them are sappers: James 126456 John 2520-467037 (Tyne Electrical Engineers) In addition there are: Driver James E 219226 Corporal James 6631-430499 (3rd West Lancashire Field Company) John 147666 Jonathan 262706- WR/28659
