Old Owl Posted 24 February , 2010 Share Posted 24 February , 2010 Hi, The 1st Bn HLI formed part of the Sirhind Brigade along with the 1/1st K.G.O.Gurkha Rifles, 1/4th Gurkha Rifles and 125th Napiers Rifles. They were involved in the Battle of Givenchy on 19th December, 1914 playing a significant part in the attack on the German lines. If you have access to a copy of the Indian Corps in France, Chapter XII gives a very good account of the battle. I hope this helps. Robert

Col_H Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 I had an Uncle in the Highland Light Infantry who died on the 19/12/1914. As far as I am able to determine they were in front of Givenchy and were sent over the top at 10:00 am. Many were cut down by heavy machine gun fire. The HLI lost 411 men between the 19th and 20th. This was a diversionary action to stop the German Forces reinforcing an attack further to the North. They temporarily took over a section of trenches but were forced back by a heavy counter attack later in the day. Regards Colin
