Remembered Today:

Regiment identification

This scan is the best i can get from then photo. Am trying to identify the regiment; I thought at first it was the East Surrey Regiment; that badge has a scroll at the bottom a crown at the top and has a star as the main part of the badge...but the interior of it doesn't seem to match it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'd go along with the East Surrey's,

Comparison with an East Surrey badge off Ebay...

I think you need glasses! That is a 23rd London badge on ebay and it even says so in your photo. The whole collection is a load of modern reproductions.

The 23rs London is voided in the centre whereas the one in the first photo is solid and is a much better match for the East Surreys.

DON'T USE EBAY AS A REFERENCE SOURCE!!

It also says in the description "East Surrey Regiment", and it still seems a good match:

As someone who actually does wear glasses, you may wish to not use that phrase in future as I personally consider it quite an insult (having been called four eyes when I first needed glasses at school).

23rd Londons were a territorial unit within the London Regiment with affiliations to the East Surrey Regiment, but separate from it. 23/LR's full title was IIRC 23rd Battalion, County of London Regiment (East Surrey Regiment), which is what has confused here I think, but it was a different and separate regiment.

The 23/LR cap badge was closely based on that of the East Surreys ... but is categorically not the same badge!

Cheers,

Mark
