Kate Wills Posted 12 February , 2010 Share Posted 12 February , 2010 I am posting this on behalf of my friend John: "I have been messing about trying to discover the origin of the winged mermaid on the regimental badge of the Royal Irish Rifles. see attached. So far I have discovered the legend of an Ulster mermaid called Labin associated with Lough Neagh, and such mermaids were used as ships figure heads; but why would an apparently naval symbol be used for an infantry regiment? I also discovered this photo of a winged mermaid on a playing card, and a Balinese winged angel???? I know a lot of mythical creatures originated from Indonesia (eg komodo dragon) instigated by Chinese traders..."

Desmond7 Posted 12 February , 2010 Share Posted 12 February , 2010 Maid of Erin icon associated with the 1798 Rebellion. My belief that the figure is a generalised 'winged angel' Des
