Remembered Today:

OR's patrol dress uniform v Officers patrol dress uniform

Hi gents,

...does anyone out there know what the main differences are between the two, other than the flat (and internal) lower pockets of the OR's jacket, and the 'bellows' type pockets on the officers jacket please? Reason i ask is that i'm assembling a uniform for a museum of an officers patrol dress uniform, and am wondering if it would be cheaper to buy and convert a second hand OR's jacket!

Thanks in advance,

tim

question not understood if you are talking 1900 -1914: ORs were never issued such a garment from official sources, exhaustive searches of Clothing Regs and PVCN and RACD ledgers have never mentioned such a garment. I know that soldiers sometimes wore them off duty, but never on duty, and have surmised [with others] that these were private purchases or regimental purchases.

Hi grumpy!

...i know the officers patrol dress uniform was an optional 'extra' that they paid for themselves, and was used for 'walking out', orderly officer/duty officer, and for evening functions when off duty in lieu of civilian clothes, as well as mess functions. My choice is to either buy an old pattern officers patrol dress/no 1 dress/best blues uniform at around £200+, or to convert a current/old pattern OR's tunic to a 1stww period officers one!

The 'Corps' that the uniform is being done up as, is the RFC. So, my question is still valid - what is the difference between an officers patrol dress jacket, and an Ordinary Ranks one, other than the bottom 'bellows' type pockets!

Does anyone know??

so the OR one referred to is the modern No. 1 dress?

I'll dog out a photo of the 'unofficial' OR version c. 1905 later on.

so the OR one referred to is the modern No. 1 dress? One problem you may face is the quality of material ..... the officers' version is much finer.

I'll dog out a photo of the 'unofficial' OR version c. 1905 later on.

Cheers grumpy!

...much appreciated - i'm going on the photies sent to me from andrew cormack at the raf museum of their uniforms, and there seems to be little or no difference other than the lower pockets (aside from the material used). The modern army OR's No:1 dress & RM No:1 dress seems to be the cheaper option!

I'll have a chat with dickie knight and see if he can do the work for me - thanks once again chum!!
