31stdiv Posted 10 February , 2010 Share Posted 10 February , 2010 Hi I'm going on a battlefield tour in a couple of months which will include the above areas. I've just finished reading 'Ypres: The First Battle 1914' by Ian Beckett which I thought was excellent. The bibliography is quite good so I've noted a couple of books I might try and locate. I wondered if anyone else had any suggestions on other books/memoirs/articles I might try? Thanks Pen
tony paley Posted 26 February , 2010 Share Posted 26 February , 2010 Pen, I have always found that the 'Battlefield' series published by Pen and Sword (I am an ordinary punter, not connected to authors or publishers) the books under the general heading Ypres, are written with the visitor in mind. Excellent and easily carried and best read before and during any visit. Tony P

31stdiv Posted 1 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 1 March , 2010 Hi Thanks for the replies. Tony - I can't find any Battleground Europe books which cover these areas in detail, but looking through the P&S website I was reminded that I had 'Walking the Salient' on my bookshelf and this does have a chapter on Zillebeke which I read at lunchtime. That has led me to 'Into Battle' by a chap called Glubb and there is a copy available in my local library so I shall go and borrow that tommorrow. Alan - Divisional histories seem to be lacking in my local libraries, but I have tracked down "The Immortal Seventh" on the Internet Archive so I'll take a look at that. Thanks again Pen
Chris_Baker Posted 1 March , 2010 Share Posted 1 March , 2010 If you can find a copy, "The war diary of the Master of Belhaven" is the excellent diary/memoir of an officer of the Royal Field Artillery who was in action at Zonnebeke/Gheluvelt (7th Division if I recall).
