paulgranger Posted 9 February , 2010 Share Posted 9 February , 2010 I inherited my maternal Grandfather's awards from his service, including his identity tag, his Victory Medal, and his silver war service badge. I've also got this (to me) mystery piece, which is a brass triangular item, with 'On War Service' on the arms, one word per arm, and a crown in the centre surmounting the date 1916. Was this something given to men who had enlisted but not yet been called up, or perhaps to Derby Scheme volunteers? As far as I know, Granddad served on the Somme, but this badge somehow looks as if it predates his actual uniformed war.
Chris_Baker Posted 9 February , 2010 Share Posted 9 February , 2010 Well, it wasn't your Grandad's! All is explained: http://www.btinternet.com/~prosearch/OWS.html

All is explained: http://www.btinternet.com/~prosearch/OWS.html Chris Many thanks for the link. As you say, not Grandad's unless he had a Dark Secret. I wonder whose it was? I'll never find out, as he and Nan are long gone, as has my aunt, who gave me the medals, or, as I was correct in describing it, this brooch.
