thegreatwar4 Posted 1 February , 2010 Share Posted 1 February , 2010 I have a Royal British Army WW1 officers tunic having a complete set of MGC buttons and a right arm tank patch but with no lapel badges currently in place (they were removed) however, the silhouette of each badge is visible (due to oxidation/wear) and approximately round with a small crown in the 12 o'clock position. The hole pattern is also easily seen. One would assume that the owner of the tunic was a member of the MGC that was later drawn into the Heavy Unit and/or the RTC (hence the tank patch on the upper right arm). Further evidence for this MGC to RTC switch is on each lapel having two slender openings in a vertical arrangement (12 and 6 o'clock) which would correspond to this type of MGC lapel badge: http://www.iwm.org.uk/server/show/conMediaFile.7400 and then there is also a pair of larger holes in a horizonal arrangement (3 and 9 o'clock) which would correspond to the attachments of the Royal Tank Corps lapel badge. http://www.greenflash.org.uk/traditions/index.html Does this deduction seem reasonable? Can anyone confirm that this is a probable explanation for the lapel hole arrangement? I can provide photographs if further clarification is necessary. Many thanks for your consideration, Cheers, TGW
tocemma Posted 1 February , 2010 Share Posted 1 February , 2010 TGW, Could you post a view of the other side of the lapel and the sleeve badge. Seeing the marks left by the badge would be useful. Are all the MGC buttons matched as regards wear and maker? Regards Tocemma
