Hi

Can anyone identify the button in this scan for me, I am not sure what era it is from or indeed if it is military.

Steve

Doubt if its military - looks classical Greek. The male figure looks animal from the waist down - Pan?

It is Mersey Docks & Harbour Board, with a plain not a roped edge so was used by the railway operating staff.

The expertise on this forum never ceases to amaze me. Just out of interest - do you know what the figures are and what they represent?

Hi David

Many thanks for the information, very much appreciated. The buttons that I have were manufactured by J. S. M. & Co of Birmingham. Do you have any idea as to the approx dates these buttons would have been part of the uniform ?

The seated figure is Minerva with Neptune laying at her feet. Not quite sure what it represents, the conquering of the sea maybe?

Steve,

Not sure about the backmark or dates, but would guess 1930s to 1960s?

Centurion,

Thanks, I asked for that did'nt I? :D

According to Roman myth Minerva and Neptune had a contest for the possession of Athens. The deity that could produce the most useful thing would win the city. Minerva produced the Olive tree and Neptune the horse. Jupiter awarded the city to Minerva (he may have been partial - she was his daughter) and she took the Greek name Athenae.

Now both Liverpool and Manchester in the past (don't laugh) have laid claim to be the Athens of the North.
