Gazette Online: Useless search engine?

It could be me.........but is the search facility on the Online Gazette a little useless?

The man I'm looking for is 2nd Lt. L. Jacques, 10th Sherwood Foresters, MC & Bar.

When I put in the surname (which is fairly unusual) and choose the 'Military Cross' option it finds no matches.

'Jacques' with no medals specified produces 187 matches. :o

I could go wading through 187 matches I suppose...........

Am I missing something?

I have had the same problem with my great grandfather (H Craddock) who had an DCM...no results!

If you succeed and find out how, please let me know

Hi Andrew

Type in Lewis Jacques and you will get both of his MC citations, Type in Jacques MC and you will get another reference.

Hi Mark

Would that be 16194 Cpl H. Craddock Durham Light Infantry DCM on 26/09/1916 ?

If it is you must remember to type H then fullstop then space and then craddock.

Hi Mark

It appears that on 08/12/1916 16194 Cpl H. Craddock Durham Light Infantry also won an MM.

London Gazette searching is notoriously quirky. An earlier thread gave some useful tips and links.

Can I join in for assistance ,please?

My great uncle :-

2nd Lieutenant Robert Emmerson DLI

On only two of his papers --MC has been written after his name. The others give no mention.

I cannot "trace" him in the London Gazette.

His surviving son is not aware of the award of the MC and he and I are anxious to find confirmation--if not the medal!!

You can also trying searching with the person's service number.

Highspen, I had a look but no luck. Have you looked at the medal index cards for your great-uncle? If not this would be your best bet.
