Fred W Posted 10 May , 2004 Share Posted 10 May , 2004 The "temporary" cenotaph erected in Victoria Park, Nelson, Lancashire, after the First World War was demo;ished in the mid 1960's. It bore no names of the dead. The present memorial was obtaine free of charge from the Claremont chirch in Burnley, and thus undestanble bears no names. How many more towns and villages in Great Britain have memorials with no names?
Tom Morgan Posted 10 May , 2004 Share Posted 10 May , 2004 The war memorial in Wednesbury, West Midlands, has no names either, Fred. It's quite imposing for a small town, enclosed by a garden and with panels for names, but all empty. The names (about 500) are on oak panels in the Parish Church. Malcolm Posted 10 May , 2004 Share Posted 10 May , 2004 The Currie War Memorial is a simple cross with a panel with: “TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED IN THE CHURCHES WITHIN THIS PARISH” There are 6 such panels with 131 of the 152 WW1 dead and 3 panels with 32 names from WW2.
