Remembered Today:

Who or what was "Troopers"

Got a feeling I am going to be embarrassed for asking this but am working my way through the EEF GHQ war diaries and there are constant refs to "Troopers". Can anyone help identify who exactly this actually was ?

Regards

Dave

I think that Troopers was the telegraphic address of the CIGS

as in Allenby to Wilson (Chief Egyptforce to Troopers London)

see Matthew Hughes' 'Allenby in Palestine'

Up till the end of WW1 a trooper was a cavelry horse, but after that it became the rank of a Cavelry private soldier, this was in the British Army

What a lovely idea; CIGS = War Horse

I suspect that the telegraphic code-name pre-dates Wilson

Does anyone know when it was adopted?
