Crab Posted 7 January , 2010 Share Posted 7 January , 2010 On the Attestation form of my grandfather for Short Service into the Army Service Corps (MT) in June 1915, he declared that he had served for 3 years with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. I would like to discover where and when he served with the regiment. Am I correct in thinking that Regimental records no longer exist for pre-wartime service for the Royal Sussex? Graham Stewart Posted 8 January , 2010 Share Posted 8 January , 2010 Pre-war Nominal Rolls for the Royal Sussex may still exist either at the National Archive or the current museum.
Paul Nixon Posted 8 January , 2010 Share Posted 8 January , 2010 There are also plenty of pre WW1 Royal Sussex Regiment service records - and other regiments for that matter - housed in WO 363 and WO 364 (National Archives and Ancestry website). You'll also find others in the WO 97 series (National Archives only, currently). Paul
Muerrisch Posted 8 January , 2010 Share Posted 8 January , 2010 Three year regular enlistments only existed for a short period [other than Guards] around Boer War 1899-1902. If you find him, I would be intrigued to know if his regimental number had an L/ prefix ..... if my theory is correct, there will be no prefix. Going out on a limb, his number might well be close to 6xxx. Holds breath .........

Grumpy There are enough records on Ancestry to give you some idea as to what was happening with the Royal Sussex and the L/ prefix around that time, a quick look suggests your theory may be partially correct. Give me a couple of hours to sort through all the available records and I'll be back....... Regards Steve
SteveE Posted 8 January , 2010 Share Posted 8 January , 2010 Grumpy Checking only the front page of the Attestation paper shows the results below. Crab Posted 19 January , 2010 Author Share Posted 19 January , 2010 Steve/Paul I'm afraid you lost me some time back in your exchanges; however, I have been beavering away at my problem without success. While I subscribe to Ancestry and I can find my grandfather's WWI service record/medals etc, I can't get access to any pre-WW I records. Can I access WO 363 and 364 on Ancestry, if not do I have to subscribe to the National Archive website to find Grandfather's service with the Royal Sussex? All I know from census takes is, he was around as a civilian (chauffeur) in 1911 when he married at the age of 21, that's not to say that he served before or after 1911. annswabey Posted 19 January , 2010 Share Posted 19 January , 2010 Any surviving service records for WW1 are on Ancestry (WO363 and WO364). If there are no papers amalgamated with his WW1 service records covering his earlier service, then they may be at the National Archives in series WO97. These are not yet online - you would have to go there or get someone to go for you.
