Hi all,

Could anyone help me with the following -

NAME: Thomas Henry Allen

RANK: Trimmer

No. : 6894/TS

DOD : 13/10/1918

UNIT: HMS Chepstow.

Can anyone give details about HMS Chepstow, was it a depot rather than a ship?

Also what is a TRIMMER and what would the TS as the end of the service number stand for?

Thanks

Kev

HMS CHEPSTOW was a Paddle-Wheel minesweeper built by Ailsa & Co. Completed April 1916. Displacement 810 tons. Complement 50. 2 x 12 pdr. guns. Designed HP 1400. Builts under the Emergency War programme. Unofficially known as 'Racecourse' class. The ships bell is in St. Mary's Church, Chepstow.

A Trimmer was a sailor who ‘trimmed’ the coal in the bunkers i.e., maintained a regular coal supply to the stokers, prevented the coal from ‘hanging up’ when being shovelled out and when coal was loaded, that the coal was spread evenly throughout the bunker to maximise storage.

Not a particularly pleasant job.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if this ship was sunk?
