Remembered Today:

At last! A cuff rank tunic!

It arrived today :-))

I have been wanting a decent one for quite a few years and with this one everything just seemed to come together....

It is a 1904 pattern tunic that has had modifications done, so my guy may have served before the war as well....

His medal card can be found here...

http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/i...=4397&st=25

but it is a bit of a mystery... the buttons are York and Lancaster... I assume he was a pre war officer in the York and Lancaster regt and transfered to Intel during the war... and somehow only made it to France in August 1918!!

I am of course going to knock myself out to get the right collar badges. The tiny holes in the collar seem to show 3 small holes in a downward pointing triangular shape...

I am one very, very, very happy boy today.........

As he served in the Intel Corps during the war, it may have been many years on a hanger...

Maybe he was even retired before the outbreak of the war.

Unfortunately the name is so common I have not been able to find his OBE on the LG.

Not found OBE, but it must be after this date

SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 7 NOVEMBER, 1918, 13123

War Office,

7th November, 1918.

REGULAR FORCE'S.

COMMANDS AND STAFF.

The undermentioned appts. are made: —

SPECIAL APPTS.

R., T.F. 30th Sept. 1918.

What was Cl HH?

Hi Michael.... for those even further down on the ladder of knowledge... like moi for instance.... Is he "Retired, Territorial Force 30th Sept 1918" ?

I don't think so. I read that as being part of the previous line

York & Lanc R(egiment), TF

Ahhh... okay, thats logical.

Do you think a TF officer is worth having research done on? I assume there is more to him than a medal card?

Best

Chris

It would be nice to complete the picture, but have you exhausted the NA files before you go spending too much money ;)

Best regards

Michael

Hi,

I have pulled the medal card from ancestory.com, is the N.A. files online?

Thanks

Chris

I think that there should be an officer's file for him

I haven't found one, but the GWF has sleuths who are much better at this than I

Give them a day or two Chris

If someone can suggest "the right man for the job" i am more than willing to pay the costs.

Hi Chris,

The LG of 20th April 1906 (LG 27906) appears to show your man joining the 1st (Hallamshire) Volunteer Btn, The York and Lancaster Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant.

LG of 28198 of 20th November 1908 shows him being transferred to 4th Btn of the same regiment.

Not his war time service I grant you, but might fill a few gaps.

Thank you very much!

A quick look up shows the 1st Volunteer Btln became the 4th in 1908. that fills in a few early life gaps.

Merci,

Chris

Chris,

Another small gap - LG 32469 of 27th September 1921 - Capt W A Burton OBE resigns commission 28.9.1921 and retains rank.

Well... I have advanced on this.....

From August 1914 he was attached to the ministry of munitions and was in the USA... In 1916 he joined the Anglo-Russian Minitions commitee... returned to the UK in May 1918 and released from the ministry of munitions. In June-July he was at harrow doing the Intel Course. Was broken off so he could be sent to France were he was desperately needed by GS(9) at HQ LofC (Lines of communication).

He was a civil engineer, and munitions specialist. Fluent French, italian, with smatterings of German and Russian.

Served in August-Dec 1918 in France. Sicjk in December... released March 1919.

Was temp Captain in 1918.. so I assume this was his prewar tunic, done up after he arrived in the UK in 1918 and with his temp captains rank.
