Yes it usually was presented at Buckingham Palace (if possible). It was a gallantry in saving life on land or sea (2 different medals)medal.By 1917 it was in two classes - Albert Medal in Gold (1st class) and simply Albert Medal (2nd class). The 1st class medal was abolished in 1949 and the 2nd in 1971.They were replaced by awards of the George Cross.(Holders of the Albert Medal(s) were invited to replace their medals with the GC at these times.

I have cuttings from a couple of newspapers, also a copy of a letter from Home Office that states that the

Albert Land Medal (red background, Sea, I think is blue)

was presented to my Father by the late King.

And yes thank you I did know that recipients of the Albert Medal that were still alive could change it to The George Cross. My Dads AM and a three other medals are at Regimental Headquarters, Bridcage Walk London, And the Guards have had them in their posession many years.

When my Father died in 1943, his coffin was draped with Nurse Cavells flag, and he was buried in the Guards enclosure at Bromptom, London, was all this because of the AM????
