jimmyboy Posted 21 December , 2009 Author Share Posted 21 December , 2009 thanks harry, does it matter the colour as i noticed some of that design are silver and some are brass coloured
Peter Doyle Posted 21 December , 2009 Share Posted 21 December , 2009 The standard badge is 'white metal'; brass badges were issued as an economy measure in 1916, but in general, are rarer. Peter
max7474 Posted 22 December , 2009 Share Posted 22 December , 2009 This badge was not one issued in brass. Only bi-metal badges were affected by this measure. A lot of rubbish was written by John Gaylor and Hugh King and this has been prepetuated despite evidence to the contrary. There were only 2 other ranks badges - the Victorian version without a scroll and held on to for decades after by old soldiers (and ones wanted to appear old) and the scrolled version shown above. Both were in white metal.
Steven Broomfield Posted 22 December , 2009 Share Posted 22 December , 2009 So if jimmyboy is seeing them in brass, would they be (ahem) "Reproduction"?
max7474 Posted 22 December , 2009 Share Posted 22 December , 2009 They have been widely faked (fake rather than repro) along with KOSB, Gordons, HLI and Liverpool Scottish. Genuine all-brass Seaforths and Black watch do exist but are Canadian badges and no British.

max7474 Posted 22 December , 2009 Share Posted 22 December , 2009 Not sure what is 'normal' with belt plates I am afraid. As I said the Vic pattern one was in use long after it should have been no more.
gnr.ktrha Posted 22 December , 2009 Share Posted 22 December , 2009 HarryBetts, Can you post a photo of the Cross belt plate? It does not sound like the usual pattern, but it would be interesting to see. There are a couple of slight variations of the O/R's badge with scroll, but these are just makers using slightly different dies. The most obvious one being St. Andrew facing directly to the front, with slightly thinner thistle border. If you see a Cameron Badge with Waterloo on the scroll, this is a waist belt center badge from post WW2 and was worn until 1994 when the Queen's Own Highlander amalgamated with the Gordon Highlanders. Aaah Ha! {its my age} it is the Waterloo Scroll[not as thought the "plain" scroll less Badge]but on an "upright" buckle [ie the badge sits top to bottom not crosswise,so would be a cross belt rather than waist belt?] I will try to get a jpg ASAP
