Newton 6 ins Medium Trench Mortar

The Newton was supposed to completely replace the 2 inch Toffee Apple medium mortar. However some Australian ORBATs reveal that some were retained alongside the Newton  right up to the end of the war. This is probably because the 6 inch did not have a chemical or smoke capacity. The Canadians used some lorry mounted Newtons - these proved useful as rapid response during the German 1918 offensive.

Many thanks for the information. The landships site was new to me and well worth exploring.

You can find a nice description of the Newton mortar, as well as some other British and French trench mortars, in a manual published by the American Expeditionary Force. An electronic copy of this manual can be found on the website of the Combined Arms Research Library.
