2nd Lt Maurice Duncan Basden

16th County of Londons (Queen Victorias Rifles)

Second-Lieut Maurice Duncan Basden 16th Btn London Rgt,attached R.F.C who met his death in a fight in the air,aged 21 years was the younger son Mr and Mrs Duncan F.Basden of 26,Thurlow RoadHampstead.

Taken from R.F.C Casualties of the War 1914-17 published Aug 1917.

"20th May 1916:Martinsyde G100 "Elephant" #7278 27 Squadron,from RFC Combat Reports:

Whilst on Patrol Involved with Roland Sh36s.16C.D.{Forced To Land Out Of Control}@ Lorgies,East of Lines,MiA{2nd Lt Basden KiA;Aircraft Shelled :Killed By Shells???[NB:2nd Lt;Basden was the First Combat Casualty of 27 Sqn,Whilst Flying Martinsyde single seaters,Other Squadrons had this type in small numbers~27 was fully equipped with them

.Designed as a Reconnaissance Aircraft,with some early successes they proved poor Fighters due to bad manouevrability & performance,being resigned to Bombing duties in time for the Somme offensive,the Toll of Pilots with this craft was very heavy."

The Crest Of 27 Squadron RAF depicts The Elephant in Honour of the Moniker given to the Martinsyde G100 "Elephant" {'Tinsyde'}because of its Sluggish Heavy Handling,see Below for Pic Courtesy of Australian Flying Corps,who also used them.
