Remembered Today:

RAF wings, are they Great War?

These RAF wings came from a house clearance along with some Royal Flying Corps photographs. They belonged to the uncle of a lady who served in the ATS and whose husband served in the RASC during the second world war. The uncle is known to have served with the RFC.

They look identical to the later RAF type except that the top is more pointed. Could they be of the type issued between 1918 and 1919?

I fully admit that I am not a wings specialist, but from the amount I have handled they look consistent with early WW2 issue wings.

Possibly post 1920's as I believe the RAF(formed 1st April 1918) remained in khaki until the end of the war, when the familiar light blue was introduced.

Hi there, an excellent site with loads of RAf info:-www.rafweb.org/ranksInd.htm

Shows the various "Wings"

click:- Trade/Role Badges

click:- Flying badges of the RFC (3/4 of the way down the page)

It shows the RFC badge in khaki.

The wings are WWII issue wings typical of those awarded upon graduation, versus private purchase,

Hi ScottM,

The top set of wings are Royal Air Force, but what about the lower ones I can't make out the letters in the centre?

I don't ever recall reading where wings were ever Khaki. WWII and later even the K.D. issue shoulder flash was red.

The "lower one" is just a picture of the reverse of the wings above ;)

The website www.rafweb.org/ranksInd.htm shown in Peter's post has pictures of RFC wings with the same black baground. I had wondered if my badge, given it's provenance might have been an early issue. It seems likely that we will never know.
