jasmor58 Posted 18 November , 2009 Share Posted 18 November , 2009 Talbot House named in honour of Gilbert Talbot, killed at Hooge in 1915. It became known as Toc H after the army signal used in the war. What did this signal mean? Jasmor58
Paul Reed Posted 18 November , 2009 Share Posted 18 November , 2009 "Toc H" is signalling phonetics for the initials T H - Talbot House. It would be 'Tango Hotel' today.

chloeflorence Posted 19 November , 2009 Share Posted 19 November , 2009 Toc H also passed into the vernacular. "dim as a Toc H lamp" was the equivalent expression to "as thick as two short planks". The Toc H charity adopted as its symbol the type of oil lamp that was used for lighting when entering the catacombs near Rome. The amount of light released was rather feeble. For those who haven't done so, Talbot House at Poperinge is well worth a visit. Jim
