Simon R Posted 3 May , 2004 Share Posted 3 May , 2004 July 7th 1916, a BE2c was hit by friendly artillery fire after flying too low over howitzer positions behind Authuille Wood. It landed pretty much on the cookhouse for D battery 245th brigade RFA just in the wood itself. Norman Tennant of that bty. records, in the Liddle, that on the observors message pad were his final words 'Do you see all those horses over by Miraumont?'. Is there any way of finding out who those airmen were? Simon.
Dolphin Posted 3 May , 2004 Share Posted 3 May , 2004 Simon Captain G A Burney (P) and Lt J A Halcrow (O) were flying BE2c 7336 of No 4 Sqn RFC on an Artillery Patrol when they were shot down over Authville Wood on 7 July 1916. Both airmen were killed in action. The crash is briefly mentioned in Trevor Henshaw's 'The Sky Their Battlefield' and both airmen are listed in 'Airmen Died'. I hope this helps.
