CWGC added the following 'new' WW1 casualties to its Debt of Honour database on Monday 16th November

Pte William Henry LOWE

10727 4th Bn, The King’s (Liverpool Regiment)

Died 27.04.15 Age 22

Commemoration: Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium

Gnr Harry REYNOLDS

104702 Royal Garrison Artillery

Died 03.11.18 Age 34

Buried: St Sever Cemetery Extension, France

NOT FORGOTTEN

The above are In From the Cold Project cases but are a little unusual.

Pte Lowe (Volunteer: Gerry Pigott)

Pte Reynolds (Volunteer: Margaret Cutress)

Pte Lowe was put forward as a non-com as he did not appear in the CWGC Debt of Honour. Following checking with GWF member, ‘Promenade’ (who has extensive King’s Liverpool records), we discovered that he had a record of the name appearing on the Menin Gate! Alarm bells rang.

Upon checking the original register for the Gate, his name duly appeared there. So it seemed his name had been deleted from the lists for some reason in the past. Today I checked with CWGC and the error came to light. His name had been removed by mistake some years ago instead of another man also named Lowe. It is now reinstated.

Thanks to Joe for his input on this one.

The case of Pte Reynolds is similar. He was put forward as a non-com as his name was missing from the Debt of Honour.

As part of the checking process it was found that Pte Reynolds had an extant service record which confirmed the details of his non-com case. However, the record, unusually, gave details of his burial location in a CWGC cemetery including the grave number. This grave was apparently occupied by a totally different casualty according to CWGC. Following checks today, it was revealed that Pte Reynolds had been omitted entirely from the Debt of Honour and he was actually buried where his record stated. The man who was supposed to be in that grave was, in fact, buried in another part of the cemetery.

So, two cases of men ‘lost’ by the system brought back in from the cold on the same day.
