AKEY Posted 15 November , 2009 Share Posted 15 November , 2009 Hi everyone, On 30th August 1917 my GGGGreat Uncle, William Akester, died in Salonika. Me and my Grandad have found out lots about the man but not about where he died. I don't know were Salonika is or what is was like; eg. were there trenches? Can anyone help? Regards, AKEY

Salonika is South of Serbia 50 miles away on the Greek coast great harbour hence why allies landed there ,very mountainous terrain .Very difficult campaign.British/French there to help Serbia ,stop the Austrians and the Bulgarians against the Serbians .British troops landed there 15 th October 1915 MC

Kate Wills Posted 15 November , 2009 Share Posted 15 November , 2009 William Akester is buried in Karasouli, a lovely hillside cemetery surrounded by stately pine trees. Burials from smaller cemeteries were concentrated here after the war.
