bluedog Posted 1 May , 2004 Share Posted 1 May , 2004 Could any member pass on any info that they may have on the fate or otherwise of the fate of the original Australian 2nd Division Memorial which depicted a bare-headed digger bayonetting the imperial eagle. I have been searching for clues for the last 7 years and so far I believe that it was destroyed or removed by the advancing German Forces, the occupying troops or the Panzer Corps on or after the advance on Peronne after May 1940. The reason for my deep interest in its whereabouts is that my Grandfather was in the 17th btn. AIF attack that took the Mont on August 31, 1918. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Piglet Posted 1 May , 2004 Share Posted 1 May , 2004 Rose Coombs in "Before Endeavours Fade" reports that the present monument replaced the one "destroyed by the Germans in the Second World War" but with no further details. The plinth of the present monument is the original, which was not destroyed. The old memorial is also mentioned in the following thead concerning damage to cemeteries and memorials in WW2.
