Remembered Today:

Unit details on German graves in CWGC cemeteries.

Chris

Recommended Posts

When trying to trace whether some German soldiers involved in a battle had died after being captured i found that the CWGC database only holds details in its database of the name and date of death of the German soldiers buried in CWGC cemteries. Yet on the gravestone when you visit the cemetery the details on the headstone's of German graves often mention the individuals unit and rank. From this point further details can then be gleaned from the Volksbund database and German casualty lists.

I am with the help of Ralph Whitehead and other kind forum members hoping to pull this information together so that a database will become available for us all to use that will give full details of Germans that are buried in CWGC cemeteries.

I am asking the kind help of any forum members who happen to visit CWGC cemeteries in France, Belgium or the UK, if they do have any spare time on their visit to jot down details on German headstones of name, date of death and most importantly unit and rank if available. If they can then add these deatils onto this thread (or if mods desire please move to a more suitable area), then i can add them into the excel sheets. Obviously please do not go out of your way but if you can forward any information from headstones it would be much appreciated.

I will keep the thread updated with cemeteries that have been completed.

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Chris

Chris,

When you say 'CWGC' cemeteries - does that mean you're not interested in stones from Municipal Cemeteries. (I'm talking about Central Scotland where I know of one German stone at least).

Speaking from a personal point of view and nothing to do with Chris' team, I'd rather have the information and find out it is already covered than not have it and miss something possibly important so I'd post it. As I said though, it is for Chris and Team to decide.

Chris, let me know if you want photographs of the men I listed.

Also, where would I find casualty lists covering the 1st and 8th Bavarian Reserve Divisions for 9-11 April 1918?

Thanks for the suggestion. I will get in touch with them as although they do not list the unit details on the online search they have photographed (as you say) the gravestones and on many of them the unit details will be useful.

Glen

Appreciate the offer of the photos but the info you posted earlier should be fine unless we come up against a ? and want to double check. Thanks. Regarding the casualty lists i will check with someone who knows far more than me and get back to you.

Anne

Yes please forward any details you have so as Glen points out see all available info.

Thnaks to you all

Chris

Here's the (lack of) details for 2 men listed on the same stone in Glasgow Western Necropolis:

WILLY FELD, 25.8.1917

ERICH JAGUSCH, 28.8.1917

According to the CWGC database, there are 2 German Graves within the cemetery, but I never found another stone, so presumably it's one grave, shared by these two men.

This two graves are in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery.

Leutnant Willy Sasse and Musketier Friedrich Pieper died in the same action, when they had a raid against British lines near Verlorenhoek (Ypres). In the same cemetery as the British soldiers who were killed by their party.
