NigelS Posted 27 October , 2009 Share Posted 27 October , 2009 There's an article in Today's Daily Telegraph 'War Memorials left to fade and crumble', which doesn't, unfortunately, appear to be on line which, as well as discussing the poor state of many memorials, also mentions a Common's motion raised by Shona Mc Isaac (Cleethorpes) signed by 103 MPs regarding the preservation of war memorials and suggesting a national day of commemoration in 2014 to mark the beginning of WWI, which can be found here: http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails....amp;SESSION=899 (it's interesting to note that an amendment has been raised to insert the Royal prefix to 'British Legion' which was omitted in the original - so someone's paying attention to detail!) Here is the report of the Common's debate on the 21st October, which I haven't seen mentioned before: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/c...#09102148001235 The Telegraph article, as well a mentioning a few memorials that are in desperate need of attention (Wold-Newton (Lincs), Southampton & Norwich), also mentions the work of the charity UK National Inventory of War Memorials (UKNIWM) which monitors their condition but apparently this only has a full time staff of two. Telegraph readers who know of memorials which need attention are asked to email details to warmemorial@telegraph.co.uk presumably to pass the information on to UKNIWM or perhaps to start a campaign? NigelS Nigel The UKNIWM only record the details of the memorial, they do not get involved with repair/restoration. For restoration projects there is the War Memorials Trust Andy

Andy, apologies if I managed to imply that it did ! There's a letter in today's paper in response to the article http://tinyurl.com/yfxwngd (scroll to 'War memorial stories' ) NigelS
