deleboe Posted 18 October , 2009 Share Posted 18 October , 2009 Hi, I am trying to find out what role the HMS Attentive played in the Zeebrugge raid in April 1918, there is alot of information on the Vindictive, Iris etc but not a thing on the Attentive? Also what duties would a Deckhand be carrying out on this ship? The chap I am researching was a Thomas McDowell (from Northern Ireland) SD1436 RNR he was awarded the 1914/15 trio plus a Mercantile marine medal. Enlisted in RNR 5th June 1915 then to HMS Attentive III 17th July 1915 - 1919. Not sure how to confirm he was at Zeebrugge or Ostend? SiegeGunner Posted 18 October , 2009 Share Posted 18 October , 2009 Attentive III as described above, but the actual Adventure class light cruiser Attentive was in the supporting fleet that accompanied the force assaulting Zeebrugge and Ostend. On the outward voyage she stood by one of the buoys, directing and guarding, and on the return she was one of the ships that brought up the rear, escorting the badly damaged Iris into Dover and picking up crew members from one of the unsuccessful Ostend blockships who had taken to an open boat. It now seems that he was posted to Attentive 2 & 3 as well as spending most of the war on HMS Arrogant which I believe was a Submaine depot ship, is it possible to find out if he was on Submarines, I see no names or numbers in brackets on any of the papers I have?
