Can any Pal confirm whether or not any Jewish soldiers are buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery? (ie the one containing the grave of Noel Chavasse )

Mark,

I think there is............I was there in March, and I thought the side near the N38 (I think that is what the road is, if I was at home I could confirm this on a map) there is a headstone that had little stones on the top. I thought the headstone was near the middle.

I am sure other Pals will confirm or deny it!

The cemetery containing Capt Noel Chavasse, contains 514 UK, 11 Australian, 6 Canadian and 28 German.

I can't recall any Jewish graves there........

I agree with Steve as I'm sure I've seen one Jewish burial there. The name might be Blostein but I can't guarantee it.

Hello Mark,

I'll check it out while passing.

Is there a particular reason why you want to know it?

In October we will be holding our battlefields tour act of commemoration there. The most senior former pupil of our school to die in the Great War, Lt Col Thomas Boardman DSO, is buried in the cemetery. We plan to read out our roll of honour, sound Last Post and lay wreaths on Boardman's grave and also on one of the German graves to commemorate our school's long association with the city of Cologne. Several Jewish boys will also be on the tour and I was wondering if I could incorporate that aspect as well.

Thank you very much Joris. Once gain a 'Pal' comes up trumps-within a few hours of me posting the request.

Thank you for the photos Joris. Our man Thomas Boardman is buried a few feet away from Chavasse. I actually met Paul Guthrie and his party in Brandhoek NM Cemetery the last time I was there in April 2003, but I don't know if you remember, Paul.
