Remembered Today:

Pte J Murdy 1st/7th Bn DLI

Recommended Posts

Hello,

according to the Battalion movements, they arrived converted to a Pioneer Battalion sometime in 1918. He is commemorated at Ploegstraat but I don't know how he died.

This is a whole section of the family that I didn't even know existed!

He had a brother I believe who survived the war serving with the Coldstream Guards.

Can anyone shed any light? I have requested a copy of pages from the diary, but had nothing back from the museum. Any help gratefully received!

I know that he lived at a house in Penton, Carlisle.

Kind regards

K

1/7 DLI were Pioneers to 50 Division, which, at the time of his death, was involved in the Battle of Estaires,9-11 April 1918,a phase of the Battles of the Lys during the German Offensive of 1918. You may find out where he died from the Bn War Diary, which is at Kew under WO95/2823. There is a bit here which I have found for an element of 50 Division, the 4th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, they were there at the same time,so you can read their account at least:

Our Leader,Member No 1,Chris Baker,is writing a book about the Battles of the Lys,so you should keep your eye out for it,as I will !

Ploegsteert,by the way, commemorates losses in quite a wide area of the battlefields in that zone.

Wow, this is so interesting..I did receive the photo but it's a poor copy and the relative that owns the original is not being super helpful.

I'll glady copy it for you, what's the best email for you?
