Paul Kennedy 2 Posted 5 October , 2009 Share Posted 5 October , 2009 I've been researching a great uncle KIA 1/07/16. I've done the medal index card, census, some war diaries and CWG with mixed results. I am planning a trip to my home town library in a few weeks to se if I can find anything like obituary or report of his death, and maybe the exact site of death etc. Would any of you know how long after a death would it be reported in the local paper? what I want to do is try to save time scrolling through pages and pages of back issues. Info I already have is Pte Edward Kennedy, 2/5 Lancs Fusiliers KIA 01/07/16 Buried Sucrerie Military Cemetary Collincamps.
jon_armstrong Posted 5 October , 2009 Share Posted 5 October , 2009 Sometimes reports of casualties appeared in the local papers within a week or so, and other times it could be months, years or even never. In many cases it depends upon whether a body was recovered, whether anyone else from the locality saw him die (and so the news beat official channels), etc, etc... SteveE Posted 5 October , 2009 Share Posted 5 October , 2009 His death was reported in the Times casualty list of Monday, July 24th 1916 so I assume local papers would be similar?
