I am not seriously researching a memorial with 152 names. Having gone through the local newspapers and gleaned as much detail of each notification of death from local news etc, I am now looking up CWGC records for these soldiers. however, I am amazeed to find over 30 whose records I cannot find on the CWGC. I have used all dates and all nationalities since I realise that quite a few served in Australian and Canadian from South Africa.

Here is one. Alan Wilson Reay Shaw age 22 from Grahamstown South Africa.

Father is John Reay Shaw and mother Mrs Shaw.

He was in the 1st SAI. He went from private to Sergeant.

His last letter home was censored by 2nd Lt Charles Joey Pattison, his good friend.

He died at Warlencourt - about 18/20 October 1916

He was always called Alan Shaw.

Cant find a thing.

Is it possible that he didnt die and only returned home etc after the memorial was all up???

I have others like this - cant find anything in SA or UK but havent as yet set off for the SA archives where the paper records are to see why the CGWC dont know them.

any ideas???

please ask a mod to transfer this to the Non Commemorateds section - you will get plenty of answers there

The South African War Graves Project is currently researching potential non-commemorations in partnership with the In From The Cold Project. I gather that they have some 1700 names under investigation and it may be worth you making direct contact to see if they have your guys on their list.
