Terry Posted 23 April , 2004 Share Posted 23 April , 2004 As a followup to Bill's tribute to the Canadians at 2nd Ypres, I would like to mention the men whose medals are now in my collection who took part in this battle and became casualties. They were thrown into a nightmare and reacted probably as well as any soldiers on the planet could have given the circumstances. Casualties from my collection include: - 6832 Pte.A.W.Mathieson, 1st Bn (Killed In Action) - 18474 Pte.C.Boolsen, 2nd Bn (Killed In Action) - 9788 Pte.H.Gardner, 3rd Bn (Prisoner of War) - 21202 Pte.H.Simpson, 5th Bn (Wounded In Action) - 22074 Pte.E.R.Latham, 7th Bn (Killed In Action) - 494 L.Cpl.F.Sharp, 8th Bn (Wounded & Prisoner of War) - 20602 Cpl.C.A.Clack,10th Bn (Wounded; later Killed In Action 11 May,1916) - 24358 Pte.H.P.Gardner,13th Bn (Wounded In Action) - 27631 Pte.A.Logan, 15th Bn (Wounded in Action)
Terry Posted 23 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 April , 2004 Another 2nd Bn man emerged from 2nd Ypres unscathed but sadle did not last long. 7654 Pte. John Legg was wounded in action on 14 Oct.,1915 and succumbed to his injuries on 19 Nov. Thanks to the efforts of Ian Bowbrick, Legg's memorial plaque is now re-united with his medals
Terry Posted 23 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 April , 2004 Another soldier who was unhurt at 2nd Ypres was 24534 Pte.W.J.Stonard, 13th Bn. He was wounded soon after, at Festubert, and again in 1918, at Canal du Nord. He was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 3 July,1919 and 1st Can.Div.Order 5647 9 Nov.,1918) Sadly Stonard did not live long, as he passed away aged 38 on 16 March,1920. He is buried in the Toronto (Prospect) Cemetary.
