jimmyjames Posted 22 April , 2004 Share Posted 22 April , 2004 This young officer (19 years) is commemorated on a parish church roll of honour in Cheltenham. He is also commemorated in the Tonbridge School Roll of Honour. On amalgamation of flying service in Apr 18, he transferred from RNAS. In March 1918 he survived when his aircraft was destroted by AA (more details of this incident requested please) and rejoined his unit (? 201 Sqn) from behind enemy lines. He was killed in action on 9th May 1918 when his patrol was involved in a major dogfight. I would be most grateful for any details of his service, the incident in March 1918 and his death in May 1918. Regards Jimmy
Dolphin Posted 22 April , 2004 Share Posted 22 April , 2004 Jimmy 2Lt F Newton was flying Sopwith Camel B6409 of No 201 Sqn RAF (formerly No 1 Sqn RNAS) when it was severely damaged by anti-aircraft fire on 11 April 1918. The aircraft crashed on landing at Ste Marie Cappelle. 2Lt Newton was flying Camel D3375 of No 201 Sqn RAF on 9 May 1918 when he was killed in action over Bapaume after he was last seen in combat with 8 Pfalz Scouts. There doesn't seem to be a corresponding claim from a German fighter pilot. I hope this helps.
