Myrtle Posted 6 August , 2009 Share Posted 6 August , 2009 While searching for memorial to one of my soldiers I came across this rather sad gravestone with details of three brothers who died while serving. I have found CWGC details for John and Edward but not David Evan Hope who is said to have died while a Turkish prisoner of war. Can anyone else find him? Myrtle Posted 7 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2009 Thanks Adrian - that looks like a possible as one of his brothers was in the Herefords and he was born in the next village. Wonder where the Turkish prisoner of war comes into the equation and what happened to his surname "Hope". Myrtle
Myrtle Posted 10 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 10 August , 2009 Adrian I believe that the soldier David Evans is probably the same as David Evan who was commemorated with the Hope brothers. When I checked the 1901 census there was no sign of David with the Hope family, however there was a 11 year old staying as a boarder with a family in a nearby village. Through further research it then became clear that David's mother nee Evans gave birth to him in 1890, four years before she married Aaron Hope. The grave inscription gives the impression that David's middle name was Evan through the 's' being left off the end. It therefore seems probable that David was a half brother to John and Edward. Thanks for your help. Myrtle
