fatbob Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 Many years ago I found a postcard written by 21634 Private Frederick Thorpe to a friend. A search on CWGC shows that he was KIA 30th July 1916. Under additional information it states 'Son of Edward and Elizabeth Ann Thorpe, of 87 Southbank Road, Southport, Lancs. M.A. (Liverpool University). Enlisted Sept. 1914.' Is it unusual to have the M.A. listed and also is it normal to have the mention of enlisted September 1914? I have not seen either of these pieces of information mentioned before. Regards, Fatbob
Terry Denham Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 Bob No - It is not unusual. The 'Additional Info' field of each man's entry is completed with information supplied by the n-o-k on the Final Verification Form they were asked to complete after the war. Many entered the academic or sporting achievements of their loved ones. Some gave details of previous military history or comments such as 'returned from South America to enlist 1914'. However, most made no comment at all and many did not return the form. The n-o-k were promised that their comments would be recorded using their own words wherever possible.
