Guest helenmars Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 Does anyone know any more about a memorial to the men of the 14TH LIGHT DIVISION (5th Oxford and Bucks) who fell at the second attack on Bellewaarde. Apparently there was a memorial at Railway Wood which was moved to Hill 60 near Zillebeke, and if so why was it moved? Thank you in advance. Paul Reed Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 It was moved, I believe, largely because of the ground in this area being sold off by a major land-owner who was worried about the future of such memorials. The CWGC moved it c.1960s or 70s.
Guest helenmars Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 So is it true it is now at Hill 60 nr Zillebeke? And is the fun park at Bellewaarde built on the site of the battle. or is the battlesite still untouched?
Aurel Sercu Posted 11 April , 2004 Share Posted 11 April , 2004 Helen, See the photo of the 14th Light Div. Memorial at Hill 60 I have just posted in the thread "Menin Gate - men who fell at Bellewaarde". (And I can assure you, as Paul said, the site is pretty much intact indeed.)
