In the Royal Artillery, officers promoted from the ranks usually were assigned to another unit, sometimes another battery in the same brigade, but in some cases, especially with those commissioned 'for services in the field' offices stayed in the same unit in which they served as ORs. A ranker would usually, but not always, be commissioned into a different regiment or battalion. In this case, since 22 Manch didn`t go to Italy till Nov 1917, I`d guess he joined them shortly after commissioning and while they were in France.

The 1st Bn didn`t go to Italy and the post above says when 22nd Bn went.
