Terry

Kevin commented yesterday that he was surprised that all that day's commems were on Tyne Cot and now I see all today's are too. Is just co-incidence?

Just adding the names to each memorial in turn. Quite a logical way to approach the job.

We may actually see these names appear on the memorial quite quickly as the engravers are on-site already re-engraving the whole memorial. A name I had accepted in December had appeared by March - much quicker than usual.

Hi Terry,

Does that mean there could be some As and Bs still in the pipeline from the GRO Other Ranks, or have they all been processed now?

It certainly does.

There are dozens from the 'B' names (and later) still outstanding to go on other memorials - plus a few 'A' names.

Even though names go forward in roughly alphabetical order, they may not be accepted in the same order or be allocated to memorials at the same time. Also, names are coming from other sources which are out of sequence (eg from Chris Harley's systematic search of 'The Times' obituaries and Jim Grant's work on Scottish Death Certificates for home deaths. The main source is the GRO 1914-21 Overseas Military Death Index but there are others.

It was only recently that we realised that there were no 1921 (Jan-Aug) deaths in the GRO Index despite its title. These have now been traced and I have started submitting names from this source - two 'B' names going forward only yesterday.

So even though names will come through in a rough alphabetic sequence, it is not always going to be so. Now that our backlog is cleared, the names will be less alphabetic in sequence as I am getting batches returned from various letters in the H to M range depending on how fast the volunteers are working.

The next batch of names added may all be on Thiepval or Helles. There is no significance in the order in which they appear - just how they are processed by me, MoD and CWGC. I am sure lots of shuffling takes place along the line.

Thanks for the explanation, Terry!

I was beginning to wonder what had happened to some of my submissions.
