Andrew Hesketh Posted 9 April , 2004 Share Posted 9 April , 2004 I assume the answer to be 'yes', but could anyone confirm that if I was looking for a MIC for a man who served in an anti-aircraft unit, then this would appear under the umbrella heading of Royal Field Artillery? HERITAGE PLUS Posted 9 April , 2004 Share Posted 9 April , 2004 Andrew There were also Royal Marine Artillery AA units. Dave
Guest Pete Wood Posted 9 April , 2004 Share Posted 9 April , 2004 Not necessarily. It depends on his job within the unit - and where he was based. Don't forget that the Royal Artillery had men in these units. In the UK, the first anti-aircraft gunners were Naval men (mainly RND). There were also Royal Engineers, and ASC etc.
charlesmessenger Posted 9 April , 2004 Share Posted 9 April , 2004 During the first half of the war AA units were manned by all branches of the Royal Artillery and, in Britain, by the Royal Navy. On 1 January 1917 all units in Britain were transferred to the RGA and those abroad were also transferred to the RGA at the end of November 1917. The REs manned the searchlight units. I would therefore suggest that you first look under RGA for your man. Charles M
Andrew Hesketh Posted 9 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 9 April , 2004 So it wasn't a straightforward 'yes' after all (never seems to be that simple does it?). In effect it could be RGA, RFA, RE, RN, RM, ASC....... Thanks chaps!!
