Hi,

Is anyone a buff on the KOYLI, and can tell me what the 2nd Battalion was doing on the 12th March 1917 to have 10 men killed (all of which are buried in Rosieres).

2Lt Cook

Cpl Creamer

Pte Barker

Pte Bryant

Pte Crampton

Pte Fox

Pte Holmes

Pte Nowell

Pte Spence

Pte Watson

The Battalion also lost a man on the 11th March,

Pte Stephens

Also 2 on the 7th March

Pte Bowner

Pte Frost

If anyone has the war diary for this period and could shine some light onto it for me, that would be smashing.

Hope to hear from someone soon.

Gordon.

There is no mention in the "History of the KOYLI" of any specific action on the 12th March, 1917.

Hello Gordon

I wouldn't bother with the museum, it is very good but they do not hold the regimental archive. This can be found at Minden House, Pontefract. The Regimental Secretary is called Major Deedes. He can be contacted at:

Major C M J Deedes

Light Infantry Office (Yorkshire)

Minden House

Wakefield Road

PONTEFRACT

West Yorkshire

WF8 4ES

lioffice-yorks@yorkshiremuseums.net

Telephone: 01977 703181

Hope this helps

Andy

Case Solved.

12th March 08:45 hours,

2Lt W E Cook, of C Coy while proceeding along the front line trench caught his foot in wire entanglement. To free himself he got onto the parapet where he was hit and killed instantaneously by an enemy snipers bullet.

Nine men of D Coy killed (in the afternnon) by two shells which landed similtaneously on their dug-out. 17 more men in the dug out were sent to Field Ambulances suffering from suspected gas poisoning.

Taken from the Unit War Diary, supplied my Maj C M J Deedes, Regimental Secretary. To him many thanks.
