Matt Dixon Posted 8 April , 2004 Share Posted 8 April , 2004 I had great pleasure(!) to go to the Netherton and Dudley sewage works to take a photo of the Memorial plaque to the men of the the Netherton, Dudley and Tipton waterways who died in the Great War. Was there a specific unit who worked on the canals of France and Belgium or would these men have been part of say the Royal Engineers, for example used as labourers? If there was a unit who worked the waterways, what exactly did they do?
Chris_Baker Posted 8 April , 2004 Share Posted 8 April , 2004 There was an Inland Waterways department of the Royal Engineers.

Matt Dixon Posted 8 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2004 I assume they were used to provide water supply and sewerage for the base camps etc?

Tom Morgan Posted 8 April , 2004 Share Posted 8 April , 2004 Canals etc are waterways. Providing water and water treatment is waterworks. Matt - are you sure it wasn't a memorial to the employees of the Netherton, Dudley and Tipton waterworks who died in the war?
Matt Dixon Posted 8 April , 2004 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2004 Tom, As usual you are quite right, sorry for the confusion. Assuming that they were then this would be correct for the supply of sanitation. Hope you're well mate, will give you a bell soon. Matt

seaJane Posted 28 February , 2017 Share Posted 28 February , 2017 Post 1 says Netherton and Dudley sewage works?
John(txic) Posted 28 February , 2017 Share Posted 28 February , 2017 Indeed, SeaJane - but where is this Works to be found? It's a big area, and a Google Search availed naught. It's a long time since that original post, and a lot may have happened in the intervening years.
