Happy Birthday the Labour Corps!

Hate to disagree with you but the Corps birthday was 22 February 1917. That is when the Royal Warrant was published and the date of its formation in official documents.

The ACI Formation of a "Labour Corps" was published on 13 April 1917.

Ivor,

OK. Then why do all the records of Hampshire ILC men that I have been able to find give 6 April 1917 as a compulsory transfer date to the Labour Corps?

I have also seen this on the record of Pte Hosking who served with 177th Coy ex Devonshire ILC.

Ian :)

Ian,

A good question!

I have looked at the records for a dozen or so original Companies. Where there is a record to it being formed it is dated 14 May 1917 and reads

Formed under authority of ACI 611 dated 13 Apr 17 (6 Company).

The only Hampshire Regiment ILC that mentions anything is the 2nd ILC (179 Company) where an entry for their Group dated 12 May 1917 says that old territorial designations ends at midnight and new numbers issued

179 Coy - 2 Lab Coy Hampshire (106801-107400).

Why territorial designations? I take it this means terrritorial as in Hampshire Regiment?

Perhaps the records for the men in 178 Company were prepared by a clerk who got the date wrong? I just do not know
