Bingo794 Posted 16 November , 2017 Share Posted 16 November , 2017 On 2/Lt Walter Lockwood Hartley. Our local town church, St.John's in Brigg has been undergoing work and in the basement was found a brass plaque dedicated to 2/Lt Hartley. Son of Charles Mandall and Annie Harley of Doncaster, husband of Mary Carrington Hartley of The Gables, 160. Thorne Road, Doncaster. KIA 13/10/1915 aged 35 with the 1/5th Bn Lincs (TF) commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais. Walter was born in the parish of Balby with Hexthorpe near Doncaster in 1880. His father was aprinter and newspaper publisher. His older brother Robert, was a journalist. Walter was listed in the 1911 census as a Bank Manager, a post he was in when he moved to Albert Street, Brigg. Regards Dick

Mark1959 Posted 21 November , 2017 Share Posted 21 November , 2017 (edited) Is this the oddest memorial? This is to the aforementioned CL Harvey Spalding War memorial window in the church of St Mary & St Nicolas, Spalding, Lincolnshire. This particular window commemorates two brothers in law, Lieutenant John Victor Ariel Gleed of the Royal Flying Corps, who was killed in action on July 7th 1917 and his sister's husband, Captain Charles Lewis Harvey of the Lincolnshire Regiment, who died of wounds received in action in France on May 10th 1917. It was donated by Sir John and Lady Wilson Gleed, parents of JVA Gleed and designed by the local vicar of Spalding, Canon Edward Pountney Gough. The men are dressed as medieval knights but each carries a photographic image of his own face. Date is a month different to OP but it's him and all record point to 10/5. Strange indeed!! DaveBrigg Posted 11 February , 2018 Share Posted 11 February , 2018 (edited) On 20/11/2017 at 18:35, Jim Mitchell said: i Image of Lt Hartley from the Doncaster Chronicle 22nd October 1915. Hope it helps. Regards. Thanks for posting this picture. He's commemorated on the Brigg town war memorial, which our students researched. We have him living aged 1 living at 38 Hall gate, then aged 11 at The Lodge, Hexthorpe, one of 9 children. In 1901, aged 21, he had moved to the bank at 210 The Crescent, Selby and worked as a Clerk in Chief. The 1911 census found him promoted to manager and visiting his fiance Mary Carrington Yates and her family at 25 Low Rd, Balby. They married soon after. We visited his memorial at Dud Corner on the 100th anniversary of his death. Edited 11 February , 2018 by DaveBrigg
DMcNay Posted 24 May , 2018 Share Posted 24 May , 2018 Sorry I'm a bit late to this thread, but here is a photograph of Egbert Edward Early, from the Lloyds Bank Memorial Album. Egbert was an employee of Capital and Counties Bank, which was taken over by Lloyds shortly after the war.
