Remembered Today:

FORT NAMEMA in East Africa

Hallo, I know it’s a forgotten place in a forgotten war, but I am very interested about this place and the actions in

the South-West of GEA between the column of Colonel Murray BSAP and the 29. F.K. company of the Schutztruppe.

My sources about this action, specially by NAMEMA are:

  • Tip and Run; Edward Paice; “The Ubiquitous Rhodesians”

  • Warriors at forgotten fronts ; Wolfgang Foerster 1931; “Diary of Lt. Karl Orth 29.F.K.”

  • Corporal Haussmann goes to war ; Colin G. C. Martin 2000.

  • Operations in German East Africa ; WW 1914-1918; Ludwig Boell 1951.

  • NRJ ; Volume II No.4 1954; Captain R. Langham “Attack on Namema”

  • some lines in the DOAZ (GEA-Newspaper)and DKB (German-Colonial-Paper)

Has anybody any info, where I can find more details what happened in these 9 days Mai-June 1916.

Perhaps information in books, archives, war diaries, photos, postcards and letters. It would be a great help .

(I have been there 2003, but I want to make a better photo report in GWF in September this year)

Cheers

Holger

Above is a page from: The Story of the Northern Rhodesia Regiment by W.V. Brelsford.

The Official History: Military Operations East Africa Aug 1914 to September 1916 describes the Namema action on pages 466 and 467.

However the most detailed account is on pages 118 - 120 of The History of the Northern Rhodesia Police by Tim Wright.

  • The History of the Northern Rhodesia Police
  • The Story of the Northern Rhodesia regiment
  • Military Operations East Africa Aug 1914 to September 1916
The book: Frontier Patrols - a history of the British South African Police and other Rhodesian forces, wasn't aviable at moment, -

and very eypensive. http://www.southafricawargraves.org/lists/SAwants.htm

Ifound a good overlook, about books from the BSAP and NRP in: http://www.bsap.org/book.html

Edward Paice wrote in his sources list (p.433) about: 2 Liddle/Messum, but I didn't found anything about this!?
