neesie Posted 25 April , 2009 Share Posted 25 April , 2009 My great uncle William Knight (255173) was killed in action on 22nd June 1917. On checking CWGC I noticed that several other Leicester Yeomanry soldiers were killed on the same day. Does anyone know what battle they are likely to have been involved in? per ardua per mare per terram Posted 26 April , 2009 Share Posted 26 April , 2009 Welcome to the forum Have you seen the war diary at the UK National Archives? WO 95/1155 Leicestershire Yeomanry 1914 Nov. - 1917 Oct.
neesie Posted 26 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 26 April , 2009 Thanks for the welcome and the info. I haven't seen the war diary but this is obviously something I will have to do in order to find out what happened that day involving a lieutenant, a serjeant, a corporal (my g. uncle) and 6 privates from the Leicestershire Yeomanry who were killed that day. They are all buried in adjacent graves (apart the lieutenant) in Villers-Faucon Communal Cemetery Thanks again Denise
Taylor17 Posted 12 July , 2009 Share Posted 12 July , 2009 Hi Denise, I've just found your post whilst search through Leicestershire yeomanry posts. Have you look at a very good website paoyeomanry.co.uk. This is where I found out a little of info on my 2x Great Uncle, Pirvate 255250 William H Rowe, who just happened to be wounded in the same action your great uncle was killed. He died of his wounds 5 days later and is buried at Tincourt New British Cemetery. Hope this helps.

Taylor17 Posted 24 March , 2010 Share Posted 24 March , 2010 hi Albet, Just seen your post with the little info about my Great Uncle Trooper Rowe. Thanks. Two quick questions: 1. Where did you get the information from? 2. Whay does "19sw multi firearms & shoulder R" mean? Thanks again, Trp255
GriffMJ Posted 4 April , 2010 Share Posted 4 April , 2010 hi Albet, Just seen your post with the little info about my Great Uncle Trooper Rowe. Thanks. Two quick questions: 1. Where did you get the information from? 2. Whay does "19sw multi firearms & shoulder R" mean? Thanks again, Trp255 Hi Trp255 1. That info is direct from the LY Muster rolls 2. Maybe 19sw is a map reference or an even more gruesome interpritation could be 19 Shot wounds or stab wounds? (I prefer the map reference, less ugly!). Taylor17 Posted 7 April , 2010 Share Posted 7 April , 2010 Thanks Albert, Where are the LY muster rolls held? I have had a think about 19sw and dont think its a map reference. It might stand for serious wounds of mutli firarms shoulder right? Trp255
