John Morcombe Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 Can anyone tell me if this chap, Hugh Ferguson MONTGOMERY CMG DSO, ex-Lt.Col. RMLI, serving on the Staff in Dublin, is entitled to CWGC status? He has an Army MIC on Ancestry (Hugh Frederick) as Bde. Major 90th Inf. Bde, but no mention of his death. Death stated in "Blumbergs" RM history as "Murdered by assassins 21/11/20".
truthergw Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 I don't think that would qualify.
larney Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 Hi John, I doubt it- one of my local War Memorials includes a man who was shown as killed in 1921, Captain Parcell Rees Bowen, of Abergwili. After a lot of investigation I discovered that he was murdered by the IRA in Dublin in 1921. As his death was not related to the war, but to an act of terrorism, then he is not commemorated by the CWGC, so I would doubt if your man would come under the CWGC either, but possibly someone out there would know for certain.... John Morcombe Posted 19 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 19 April , 2009 Sorry folks, my PC refuses to find him, but wikapedia link to CWGC shows him OK. I assume he was accepted recently.
Terry Denham Posted 19 April , 2009 Share Posted 19 April , 2009 He would certainly qualify. Any person serving in a Commonwealth armed force between 04.08.14 and 31.08.21 qualifies upon death during that period. 'Terrorism' or any other cause is immaterial as is his location of death. Montgomery was a fairly recently accepted non-com. John Morcombe Posted 20 April , 2009 Author Share Posted 20 April , 2009 What is wrong with my PC? It refuses to find several recent additions to CWGC records (I.R. BOLTON RMLI & MONTGOMERY). I can only find them via the cemetery search. A bleedin' pain.
corisande Posted 21 May , 2010 Share Posted 21 May , 2010 I have been researching Hugh Ferguson Montgomery as part of the Cairo Gang Murders My take on him is here The MIC refered to by the OP is wrong. He does have a MIC, and as far as I can see the only way to get it onlne is with a FindMyPast subscription. Their search facility indicates they have it If anyone can access it, can they let me have the details on it

corisande Posted 22 May , 2010 Share Posted 22 May , 2010 Thanks Mark Amazing the odd bits of info that lurk in the depths of the Internet. I have now discovered that Montgomery played a number of First Class cricket matches for Somerset and MCC Right-hand batsman. He played, not very sucessfully, in 17 first class matches over 8 years, in total at a batting average of 13.8 and took 5 wickets at an average of 53.
