Peter Beckett Posted 3 April , 2004 Share Posted 3 April , 2004 Bought this book today from Collins Bookshop in Frankston, Victoria for $A45 and there are some really great photos in it. To quote the introduction: "examines some of the record of official and unofficial images in unexpected ways". While it is based on Australian photographers such as Frank Hurley, it also shows unofficial photos from Gunner Barnes. The clarity and candid shots, often taken with a Kodak camera, often concealed from official eyes are well worth looking at. There are photos of stretcher parties lying exhausted after working for 60 hours without a break, even a shot of members of the Chinese Labour Corps with men of the 2nd Australian Light Railway Operating Coy,in Belgium during October 1917. All in all I would have to say money well spent for a very graphic collection of Western Front scenes. I give it 10 Stars out of 10 Peter
