ANZAC DAY

The NZ Gov't has just put out an official warning to NZers to stay away from Turkey at Anzac Day, because of the arrest of several members of a terrorist group which originates in Turkey, and which seems to be planning something

I don't know what Australia will do

Any comment from Turkish Pals?

Australian Goverment has issued the same warning "to stay away".

But many, I think will still go as its hard to stop it completly.

I think the best target for the Terrorist will be later this year in Greece.

If you mean the Olympics, that is already scuppered. Nothing to attack. :D

ozgur,

I am in the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas when the 911 attacks happened. When it came time for my return home I had to go to an anti terrorism briefing so they could tell me how to be safe in my own country.

The briefing must have worked because nothing has happened to me sense my return. ;)

I visited Turkey in May 02 and had a most wonderful time. I posted some of my pictures from Gallipoli under "Other Theaters" here on the forum. I hope to return to your country for another visit either in 05 or 06.

All the best,

Jon

Mate,

The warning about possible terrist attack on large gatherings of so call Westerners in Turkey is not new as you state.

It s a part of the times we live in. These terrist will always find a way to attack people they don't understand, over something (like them) we had little control over.

I recieved something of the same thing (anti terrist warnings) when I was sent on exchange to the UK in the eighties. We aussies had to go through all the stuff because of the Irish.

It even ment being arreasted in Germany when we went to visit a another unit only promblem was they didn't know we were coming and the IRA had tried to attack them a few days before.

So its not just the middle east and some of its people who can cause these problems.

I know many aussies will still visit your country to be at Gallipoli on the 25th April as their fathers or Grand fathers did many years ago, where posible death or injury was also on the cards.

Cheers

I believe that to avoid Gallipoli on 25 April would akin to deserting the battlefield. If you have planned a trip, carry it through. But don't let your kids go, it's not their war - yet.

I don't think the warnings will keep Australians from going to the Anzac Day services at Gallipoli. Even the Australian Defence Minister is still going to attend.

Jon,

Great pics. I am planning to visit the area in May when it wont be too crowded :)

your first photo: Yes it is definetly X beach.

a small note: the Nusret in display in Çanakkale is a replica. the original Nusret , though heavily modified, is rusting in Mersin Harbour:

it is a shame to keep the ship in this shape. But what would you excpect from a mentality which made razor blades from the last representative of the battlecruisers, Yavuz

Mate,

Are saying Turkey has scrapped the last Battle cruser? Was it the Breslau (sorry spelling) left after the war.

Wasn't this a meusem or something in Istambul.

Shame

Goeben/Yavuz was scrapped in 1974. What a mad decision. we only have her chimney at the naval museum in Istanbul

Breslau (midilli) was the light cruiser escorting Goeben. It was sunk during the WW1.

Yes, Money ... Geez

If those stupid officials decided to turn her into a museum it could have provide more money in 20 years though.

Anyone who's been to Gallipoli for Anzac Day knows there is a huge Turkish military presence, both in the lead-up to the day, and for at least a few days afterwards. I was stopped at several checkpoints when I was there for ten days in 1995.

When I was there again in March 2001 and August 2003, the army presence was not so noticeable, but even so, one of my colleagues and I were stopped and interviewed by a machine-gun-armed checkpoint near the museum while we were driving at night.

I'd say Gallipoli would be one of the safer places to be this coming weekend.

Terrible shame about the Yavus. It survived the longest of all that unfortunate race of ships even longer I think than the American Alaskas. Ironically, with all the movies coming out nowadays on war and history, the Turkish government could have offered the ship as an inimitable film location! Maybe someone like James Cameron or Steven Spielburg would one day be interested in doing a film on Jutland or something... even as a museum piece it would be invaluable. It's such a shame that people aren't as interested in their heritage as they should be. I think it's an endemic problem with todays youth, they're more interested in MTV or the latest craze than learning their own heritage.

Truly sad,

Richard
